The 2021 Skills Audit

This year we have surveyed more than 800 digital technology businesses and professionals to pull together our annual skills audit.

Tech is a key industry and in the last few years been continuing to grow in importance. Prior to Covid, UK Tech sector GVA growth was nearly six times as fast as that of the economy as a whole, an increase of 43% over the last 8 years.  This growth is mirrored in UK tech employment which grew by 40% in the last 2 years.

Despite the huge challenges posed by the Covid-19 epidemic, there have still been signs of continued growth in 2020, with our data showing that 42% of tech companies reported an increase in revenue over the past 12 months, while almost half (46%) said they’d increased employee numbers.

Unsurprisingly, 2020 has been a time of huge change with 37% of respondents reported having to change their product or service offering, while business and client requirements have changed for over half – showing the importance of adapting in line with the market throughout the pandemic.
